Recently with the economy taking turn for the worst, as energy cost continues to raise people are trying to save money any way they can.  Heating costs have skyrocketed as petroleum goes up.  Many people are looking to the past for help in saving money on heating.  Those that are old enough remember waking up and dressing for school beside an old iron potbellied woodstove with the center red from the big fire that was blazing inside it.  They can remember how nothing could compare with the toasty warmth of the burning firewood.  People yearning for that type of warmth that is cheaper to use than electricity or gas are now turning back to wood burning stoves to keep them warm.  People will not find the old potbellied style anymore, now there are new and improved heaters that are designed to fit with any décor’.   These stoves feature glass windows to view the romantic flames flickering and enjoy the warmth and ambience that is emitted.  The heaters now come in a large variety of styles and colors.  Wood burning stoves have evolved a long way from the classic potbellied stove, from the rectangular cabinet style circulator to the heaters that look like a fireplace.

Wood Burning Fireplaces

Wood burning fireplaces are more economical than regular fireplaces and put out more heat into the room where it is needed.  If you ever had experience with a standard open fireplace, you can recall how they were literally useless because of the heat escaping out the chimney.   The fireplace stoves are nice additions to any home; they are very nicely designed for looks and rustic class.  Most of these come with blowers attached; these spread the heat throughout the room so you can be comfortably warm wherever you are in the room without having to “hug” the heater.   With the new design also comes technology to help the heater hold the heat longer, you can now wake up to a fire instead of a few cold ashes in the stove.  You can still get a vintage style iron stove but it is not the potbellied stove.  These are rectangular front loading stoves that are shorter than the cabinet style circulator, which loads at the side.  Today these heaters have a new look and a new meaning when it comes to warmth.

What to Burn?

It is important when you burn wood to know which firewood will give you the best heat.  Always remember the harder the hotter, hard woods such as oak, maple and birch will burn hotter than softer woods such as pine and cedar.  Another important fact is to make sure you only burn dry split logs to prevent damage to your flue and stove and reduce the efficiency.  The new stoves can now heat spaces as large as 1000 square feet, could your grandmother make that claim?   Enjoying warmth, rich romantic style and comfort can now be achieved with the new stoves of today.  Now it is time to get some wood, start the fire, sit back, and enjoy.
